Poland to grant official holiday status to May 2 and August 15

Poland’s Ministry of Culture and National Heritage is preparing legislation to give official public‑holiday status to two dates: 2 May, currently celebrated as Flag Day, and 15 August, the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Deputy minister Maciej Wróbel said the ministry plans to formalise these days in a new law on state symbols and holidays, and is also considering expanding the 2 May celebration to include the White Eagle and to commemorate the Battle of Warsaw. The proposal would change the current practice that 15 August is not a mandatory flag‑raising day.

If adopted, the changes would make both dates recognised national holidays, affecting public institutions, schools and workplaces across the country.
