Poland to implement higher packaging fees and new deposit system updates

Starting January 1, 2027, beverage producers in Poland will face significantly higher product fees for failing to meet packaging collection requirements. The base fee is set to increase from 1 PLN to 5 PLN per kilogram, with potential maximum rates reaching 15 PLN per kilogram. These regulations aim to increase corporate responsibility and incentivize more efficient recycling and collection systems.

These changes affect producer obligations and do not automatically change the deposit amounts paid to consumers. Under the existing deposit system, which has been active since October 1, 2025, consumers can still receive 50 groszy for plastic bottles up to 3 liters and metal cans up to 1 liter.

Technological advancements are also being introduced to simplify the deposit process. While many stores currently use paper vouchers issued by machines that must be redeemed at the register, new automated devices are appearing in larger cities. These machines allow consumers to receive deposit refunds directly onto payment cards, eliminating the need to manage paper coupons.
