Poland to increase oversight of physician contracts and earnings

A debate has emerged in Poland regarding the lack of transparency in physician contracts and total earnings funded by public money. The discussion was triggered by reports of a non-specialist doctor at the Southern Hospital in Warsaw earning approximately 1.6 million PLN annually through multiple facilities.

Concerns have been raised by the Association of Polish Counties that the National Health Fund (NFZ) and the Ministry of Health lack a complete overview of the total compensation and actual working hours of individual medical professionals across different entities. This lack of data makes it difficult to verify if declared working hours are physically possible or if public funds are effectively improving patient access to care.

In response, the Sejm has adopted regulations to expand data collection through the Agency for Health Technology Assessment and Tariff System. New measures aim to link medical data with professional license numbers or PESEL numbers to improve oversight of total working time and employment forms.
