Poland to introduce new quality standards for solid biofuels

The Polish government is preparing a new legislative project to introduce quality requirements for a new category of fuels known as ‘solid biofuels’. This category includes products such as briquettes, pellets, wood chunks, and straw bales.

Currently, biomass derived from trees, shrubs, and agriculture is not subject to the state quality control system. The Ministry of Climate and Environment aims to prevent contaminated fuels, potentially containing waste, from entering the market. Under the proposed regulations, businesses introducing these fuels to the market will be required to issue quality certificates and conduct testing in accredited laboratories. The estimated cost for a single sample collection and test is approximately 8,000 PLN.

To ensure compliance, the Trade Inspection will monitor the market, while the National Revenue Administration will inspect imports during customs clearance. The sale and customs processing of solid biofuels that do not meet these new quality standards will be prohibited.
