Poland to phase out Nutri-Score food labeling system
The Polish Ministry of Health has announced the phase-out of the Nutri-Score food labeling system following consultations with industry stakeholders. Out of 25 participating organizations, 22 opposed the adoption or continued notification of the Nutri-Score system.
Food products currently bearing the Nutri-Score label may be introduced to the market until December 31, 2028. To prevent food waste and account for costs already incurred by businesses, products already in circulation can remain on shelves until December 31, 2030. An exception applies to products imported from countries where the system remains active, such as France, Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, Luxembourg, and Portugal.
Critics and industry organizations have highlighted several methodological flaws in the system. Common complaints include the selective promotion of certain products over others, the practice of providing ratings based on 100g or 100ml rather than recommended serving sizes, and the potential devaluation of natural, minimally processed foods.
