Poland to regulate private label transparency in retail

The Polish Ministry of Agriculture is preparing new regulations to increase transparency regarding private label products in retail chains. The proposed rules aim to prevent manufacturers from being hidden in small print on packaging.

Under the new guidelines, retailers will be required to clearly state the name of the actual producer or importer on the product packaging. The information must be presented in a prominent manner, using black font on a white background, and must not be smaller than the font used for the distributor. Additionally, the text must be placed within a frame that occupies at least 50 percent of the area of the product's trademark.

Currently, many well-known dairy producers manufacture goods for discount stores under various brand names. For example, Polmlek produces Pilos butter for Lidl, while Mlekovita produces Mleczna Dolina products for Biedronka. The regulations seek to ensure consumers can easily identify the true origin of these goods without needing magnification.
