Poland to Rename 2 May Flag Day and Designate 15 August as Warsaw Battle Day

Poland’s Ministry of Culture and National Heritage is preparing legislation to rename the 2 May national holiday. The day, traditionally celebrated as Flag Day, would become “Flag and White Eagle Day” (Święto Flagi i Orła Białego) without changing its status as a non‑working day. At the same time, the ministry plans to give the 15 August celebration – already a public holiday for the Assumption of Mary – an official state designation as “Day of the Warsaw Battle” (Dzień Bitwy Warszawskiej) to commemorate the 1920 victory over Soviet forces. The proposals are part of a broader draft law on state symbols and holidays and will require parliamentary approval.
