Poland considers selling MiG-29 fighters to Bulgaria

MiG-29 Poland Bulgaria Ukraine military aid

Poland is considering the sale of its remaining MiG-29 fighter jets to Bulgaria, according to Polish Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defense Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz. The potential sale was a key topic of discussion during meetings between Polish and Bulgarian officials in September. Bulgaria has expressed interest in acquiring the aircraft to maintain its airspace defense capabilities while awaiting the full operational readiness of its new F-16 fleet.

Separately, Poland has announced a military aid package for Ukraine valued at approximately 50 million euros, which includes two MiG-29 fighters, Piorun anti-aircraft missiles, and various artillery and 20mm ammunition. Reports indicate that one of the aircraft being sent to Ukraine is in flight-ready condition, while the other is intended for spare parts due to reaching the end of its operational life. Poland plans to replace these aging jets with unmanned aerial systems, with the first American MQ-9B SkyGuardian expected at a Polish base in January 2027.

If an agreement with Bulgaria is not reached, Polish officials noted that Warsaw may reconsider providing the remaining MiG-29s to Ukraine.
