Poland tree removal regulations and potential fines

In Poland, property owners must adhere to specific regulations regarding tree removal to avoid significant financial penalties. While a permit is generally required, exceptions exist based on species, trunk circumference, and the purpose of removal.

Permit requirements are determined by measuring the trunk circumference at a height of 5 cm. Limits vary by species: poplars, willows, and certain maples do not require permits if the circumference is under 80 cm; chestnuts, acacia, and plane trees have a 65 cm limit; and other species have a 50 cm limit. Certain fruit trees and invasive species may also be exempt.

For legal removals, fees are calculated based on the circumference measured at 130 cm. Rates vary significantly by species, ranging from 12 PLN to 210 PLN per centimeter. Unauthorized removal can result in fines that are double the standard legal fee, with maximum penalties reaching over 32,000 PLN depending on the tree type and size.
