Poland-Ukraine diplomatic rift over grain imports and reconstruction

Poland’s president Karol Nawrocki withdrew Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky’s White Eagle Order, the country’s highest honour, prompting a sharp diplomatic dispute. Zelensky skipped a summit in Gdańsk to avoid the controversy, and the move has strained the long‑standing security partnership that both sides have relied on since Russia’s 2022 invasion.

At the same time, economic friction has grown as Ukraine redirected grain shipments through Poland after losing sea‑route access. The influx saturated Polish markets, depressing prices and prompting Warsaw to curb Ukrainian grain imports, a step Kyiv views as hostile. Both governments also compete for leading roles in the massive reconstruction effort in Ukraine, with Poland seeking to position itself as a logistics hub while Kyiv aims to retain control over funding and contracts.

These political and commercial tensions reflect broader pressures on Poland’s rural electorate and on Ukraine’s need to demonstrate sovereignty, raising concerns about the cohesion of the EU‑NATO front that has long presented a united stance against Russia.
