Poland undergoes digital transformation through medical IT and data center expansion
Poland is experiencing significant shifts in its digital landscape, driven by both medical informatics advancements and a massive expansion in data center infrastructure.
In the healthcare sector, the use of Recovery and Resilience Facility (KPO) funds has improved cybersecurity and led to the digitalization of 95% of hospital discharge summaries. However, Rafał Dunal, president of the Polish Chamber of Medical Informatics (PIIM), warns of a “technological colonization” as foreign funds and technology groups, primarily from the United States, acquire Polish IT companies. He also noted that increased demand from these funds has driven up the prices of IT solutions.
Simultaneously, Poland is entering a major boom in data center development to support banking, administration, and artificial intelligence. While the country currently possesses 200-250 MW of operating capacity, projections suggest this could reach 600 MW or even 1 GW by 2030. This expansion brings challenges regarding energy consumption, as a single 100 MW data center can consume nearly as much electricity annually as 478,000 average Polish households.
