Poland updates energy storage regulations and advances large-scale BESS projects
New amendments to the Polish Construction Law, effective from early 2026, have introduced simplified administrative procedures for standalone Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). Standalone energy storage facilities with a capacity between 300 kWh and 2,000 kWh can now be implemented through a notification process rather than requiring a full building permit. However, projects exceeding the 2,000 kWh threshold must still obtain a formal building permit, and all investors must comply with strict fire protection requirements and provide necessary design documentation.
In parallel with these regulatory shifts, the Jedwabno energy storage project near Toruń is nearing completion. Developed by R. Power, the 150 MW / 300 MWh facility has completed the delivery and installation of 64 battery containers and 32 transformer stations. The project, executed by a consortium including Nomad Electric and ESIX, is scheduled for grid connection in December 2026. The development is supported by a 270 million PLN financing agreement with Siemens Bank and Erste Group Bank.
