Poland updates military aviation engagement protocols
Following a Russian jet drone strike approximately 2 km from the Polish-Ukrainian border near Dorohusk, Poland has initiated significant changes to its military aviation engagement protocols. The strike occurred on the Ukrainian side of the border and did not violate Polish airspace, but it prompted the Government Security Centre to issue multiple alerts to residents in the Lublin and Podkarpackie voivodeships.
In response to the increasing threat from Russian drones and cruise missiles, the Polish Ministry of National Defence, following recommendations from Operational Commander General Ireneusz Nowak, is transitioning from visual identification (VID) to positive identification (PID) for engaging foreign aircraft. This new protocol allows pilots and operational commanders to make decisions to shoot down unauthorized objects based on radar data and other system information, rather than requiring direct visual confirmation. This shift is described by Deputy Minister Cezary Tomczyk as a significant development within NATO standards to ensure rapid response times against high-speed threats.
During the incident, the Polish military put aviation and ground-based air defense systems on high alert. To facilitate military maneuvers, the Polish Air Navigation Services Agency (PANSA) redirected civilian passenger aircraft to air corridors further west. Local authorities in the Lublin region also activated emergency sirens and established crisis management teams to monitor the situation continuously.
