Poland updates NFZ cervical cancer screening with HPV testing

The National Health Fund (NFZ) has updated its cervical cancer prevention program by replacing traditional cytology with high-risk HPV (HPV HR) testing. Unlike cytology, which examines cell abnormalities in the cervix, the HPV HR molecular test detects the genetic material of high-risk human papillomavirus types that can lead to cancer.

If a patient tests positive for high-risk HPV, the laboratory automatically performs liquid-based cytology (LBC) on the same sample to check for cellular changes, meaning no additional sample collection is required. If no abnormalities are found via LBC, the HPV test is typically repeated after 12 months. If cellular changes are detected, patients may be referred for colposcopy or biopsy.

The program is free of charge for insured women aged 25 to 64. No referral is required, and appointments can be made directly at participating facilities or through the Central e-Registration system via the Patient's Internet Account.
