Poland urges EU to allow temporary suspension of asylum claims
Poland is calling on the European Union to permit the temporary suspension of asylum applications during periods of mass migration. This request follows an 18-month policy in which Poland halted registering asylum claims for migrants entering from Belarus, a measure originally intended as a temporary response to perceived destabilization efforts by Russia and Belarus.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced on September 16 that the bloc will soon propose a ‘European emergency response framework.’ This framework aims to provide flexibility in applying standard migration procedures during instances of ‘engineered and weaponized’ mass migration.
While Polish officials, including Deputy Interior Minister Maciej Duszczyk, have welcomed the prospect of such a framework, rights advocates and experts warn that suspending asylum processes could violate international law and undermine human rights protections.
