Poland warns of health risks from sugary sodas and energy drinks

Health experts highlight that regular consumption of sweetened carbonated beverages can lead to weight gain, increased risk of type‑2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and hypertension. Dr. Jeremy London describes the high sugar load as a “liquid death,” noting that the calories from soda are easily consumed without satiety, upping the likelihood of obesity and metabolic disorders.

Separate concerns surround energy drinks, whose caffeine, taurine, guarana and high sugar content may cause heart palpitations, insomnia, anxiety and other cardiovascular symptoms, especially in children and teenagers. Poland joined 33 other countries that have introduced bans on the sale of energy drinks to minors, enforcing the restriction from 1 January 2024 and extending it to vending machines. Despite the ban, surveys show a substantial share of under‑age consumers still obtain these drinks, indicating that legal limits alone are insufficient without stronger enforcement and education.

Both beverage categories underline the need for public awareness and dietary guidance to reduce excessive sugar and stimulant intake, particularly among youth.
