Poland warns of identity fraud via fake census workers and mObywatel apps

Authorities in Poland are warning citizens about two distinct methods of identity-related fraud and impersonation.

Reports have emerged regarding suspicious individuals visiting homes under the guise of conducting a census. These individuals claim to represent Statistics Poland (GUS) and request personal data, and in some instances, fingerprints. While Statistics Poland is conducting legitimate household surveys, officials emphasize that all authorized enumerators must carry official identification. Residents are advised to verify an enumerator’s identity through the official GUS website or their statistical helpline before providing any information.

In a separate development, there is a rising threat involving fake digital identities, colloquially referred to as ‘mFake’ or ‘Fake mObywatel’. Fraudsters are using unofficial applications, manipulated screenshots, and interface generators to mimic the official mObywatel mobile identity app. These counterfeit documents are used to bypass security checks, commit fraud, or impersonate others in various settings, including retail, service points, and official institutions.
