Poland weighs site for new U.S. permanent military base

The Polish government has authorized Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak‑Kamysz to begin talks with Washington on establishing a permanent United States military base on Polish soil. Officials are considering locations near the western city of Wrocław and the central city of Poznań, both of which have extensive transport and airport infrastructure.

The proposed complex would accommodate up to 5,000 additional U.S. troops and their families, providing housing, schools and services for as many as 25,000 people. Estimated costs could reach 12 billion złoty (about $2.6 billion), with the majority to be funded by Poland. Poland already hosts roughly 6,000 American soldiers on a permanent basis and several thousand more on a rotating basis; the new base could raise the total U.S. presence to around 15,000 personnel. The plan may also involve relocating some U.S. units from Germany. Polish officials see the base as a crucial deterrent against Russian aggression and a reinforcement of NATO’s eastern flank.
