Germany and Poland police warn of rising fraud targeting elderly
Police in Germany and Poland are issuing urgent warnings following a surge in sophisticated fraud targeting elderly citizens. Criminals are employing various tactics, including ‘grandchild scams,’ fake bank advisors, and impersonation of police officers or medical professionals to extort money.
In Poland, several high-value incidents have been reported. One 87-year-old woman lost approximately 120,000 PLN after a man visited her at night claiming her son had been in an accident. Another victim lost nearly 100,000 PLN after being manipulated by a fake financial advisor into taking out a loan. In Krakow, a 74-year-old man lost both digital transfers and cash totaling tens of thousands of euros through fraudulent investment schemes.
In Germany, authorities are reporting similar trends. In Bergkamen, an 88-year-old man was defrauded of 2,400 EUR by a fake bank employee. In Heide, a couple lost nearly 20,000 EUR to individuals posing as contractors. Police in the Heinsberg district have also noted a new strategy involving shock calls conducted in Russian to target specific demographics. Law enforcement agencies advise the public to never provide financial information over the phone, to hang up immediately when pressured, and to verify all claims through official, known contact numbers.
