Poland abortion protests erupt across dozens of cities

Thousands of demonstrators gathered in approximately 28 Polish cities, including Warsaw, Krakow, and Poznan, to protest against strict abortion laws and demand access to free, legal services. The demonstrations, organized by groups such as the All-Poland Women's Strike, coincided with the sixth anniversary of a 2020 Constitutional Tribunal ruling that significantly restricted abortion access by banning procedures in cases of fetal abnormalities.

Protesters accused Prime Minister Donald Tusk’s liberal coalition of failing to fulfill campaign promises to liberalize reproductive rights. Although the Sejm recently passed two bills—one aimed at decriminalizing assistance in an abortion and another restoring access in cases of severe fetal defects—activists have dismissed these moves as “token gestures.” They argue the government likely knows the legislation will be vetoed by conservative President Karol Nawrocki, who has expressed support for protecting life from conception.

In cities like Piotrków, counter-protests were also reported, with groups such as the Coalition for Life and Family calling for a presidential veto. The current legal framework in Poland, which allows abortion only in cases of rape, incest, or risk to the mother's life, remains among the most restrictive in Europe.
