Poland's ZUS rolls out electronic benefit claims and new pension card reforms

From 1 July 2026 the Zakład Ubezpieczeń Społecznych (ZUS) introduced simplified procedures for submitting documents required for sickness‑related benefit claims. Applications and supporting files may now be sent electronically as scans, e‑mail attachments or through employer payroll systems. The filing method depends on the payer: employers that insure more than 20 employees assess eligibility and pay the benefit themselves, while those covering 20 or fewer forward the electronic request to ZUS, which must receive the complete file within seven days. Electronic copies submitted to ZUS carry the same legal weight as paper forms signed by hand.

At the same date ZUS also launched a new design for the pension‑beneficiary card used by retirees and pensioners. The plastic card, made of PCV, includes security features such as guilloche patterns and micro‑printing, and an updated layout that omits the issuing branch. An electronic version is available in the mObywatel app with a refreshed appearance. Holders of existing cards do not need to apply for a replacement; the old cards remain valid until their expiry date.

Both measures aim to reduce paperwork, speed up benefit payouts and improve document security for millions of Poles.
