Poland’s 56‑metre Mother of Mercy statue near completion in Konotopi

A monumental statue of the Mother of Mercy (Matka Boska Miłosierna) is nearing completion in the village of Konotopi, about 15 km east of Toruń in Poland’s Kuyavian‑Pomeranian region. The monument will stand 55.6 metres tall, surpassing the well‑known Christ the King statue in Świebodzin and the Christ the Redeemer figure in Rio de Janeiro, and is slated to become the world’s tallest Marian monument.

The project is financed privately by Polish billionaire Roman Karkosik, founder of the Boryszew industrial group, and his wife Grażyna. Construction began in early 2025 and has progressed rapidly, using a novel, pyramid‑style concrete‑piling method that allowed it to be built in just 13 months instead of the typical five to ten years. Approximately 2 500 m³ of special concrete were poured, and the statue includes a 15‑metre crown that houses a viewing platform reachable by lift.

The statue’s designers claim the monument will endure for at least three centuries, employing concrete with self‑cleaning properties to resist thermal stress. An official unveiling is planned for 15 August, when the site is expected to attract pilgrims and tourists alike.
