Poland's agricultural biogas plants total 209, producing 840 million m³ biogas annually

By the end of May 2026, Poland operated 209 agricultural biogas installations managed by 175 independent entities. Of these, 203 plants co‑generate electricity and heat, two produce biometane, electricity and heat together, and four focus solely on biogas. The sector’s total electrical capacity reached 188.8 MW, with an additional 5.5 MW for green biometane.

During the previous season, 515.2 million m³ of biogas was produced, of which 482.5 million m³ was converted into electricity, generating 1,080.969 GWh. Of this, 903.525 GWh was sold to the grid while the remainder covered the plants’ own needs. By‑products include over 6.1 million tonnes of post‑ferment fertilizer, replacing costly chemical alternatives. Although biometane output remains modest—about 2,500 m³ injected into the network—it marks a promising new revenue stream for Polish farms.
