Poland's Donald Tusk grants award to heroic officer
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has announced an additional benefit from the prime minister's fund for Łukasz Schön, a police officer who saved 17 people from a burning building in Chorzów.
During a fire at a residential building on Morcinka Street, Schön and his partner rescued 17 individuals from smoke-filled floors. The rescue efforts resulted in Schön suffering severe carbon monoxide poisoning and brain hypoxia. This led to the development of Lance-Adams syndrome, a rare neurological condition causing muscle spasms and balance issues, as well as post-traumatic stress disorder.
Due to his health condition, Schön has transitioned to a pension and ended his service in the police force. Interior Minister Marcin Kierwiński confirmed that the officer has also received compensation from the Katowice Provincial Police Headquarters and a pension with an allowance.
