Polish nuclear plant construction advances as Bechtel takes site, Budimex begins earthworks
Polskie Elektrownie Jądrowe (PEJ) transferred the land for the first Polish nuclear power plant at Choczewo to U.S. contractor Bechtel, which will act as the general contractor and manage the site. Bechtel appointed Polish construction firm Budimex to carry out earthworks and site‑preparation tasks, including terrain leveling, temporary roads, drainage and erosion control. The contract for the earthworks is valued at roughly 208.9 million PLN (about 49 million EUR). Over 330 ha of forested land have been cleared and prepared for the project. The plant will consist of three Westinghouse AP1000 reactors with a combined capacity of about 3.75 GW, with the first concrete pour scheduled for 2028 and commercial operation of the first block expected in 2036. The development is described by officials as the largest investment in Poland’s modern economy and a strategic step toward energy security and diversification away from coal.
