Poland's growers face higher currant prices, new pasture mix guidelines

Polish currant producers are experiencing a sharp rise in purchase prices, now reaching up to 4.70 PLN per kilogram, after a six‑year decline of 27 % in planted area and reduced yields caused by frost and drought. Small processors are withdrawing from the market, but the higher prices may encourage re‑planting if they remain attractive.

Agricultural advisers have issued recommended botanical compositions for permanent green uses. For meadows used solely for mowing, high grasses should make up 40‑60 % of the sward, low and medium grasses 30‑40 %, and leguminous plants 10‑20 %. Pasture mixes should favor species tolerant of grazing, with high grasses at 30‑40 %, low/medium grasses at 40‑60 %, and legumes at 15‑20 %. Mixed mowing‑grazing areas are advised to keep a more balanced share of each group, around 30‑50 % for both high and low/medium grasses and about 20 % legumes. These ratios aim to boost yields, protein content of feed, and natural nitrogen fixation.
