Poland's historical nuclear program and the death of Sylwester Kaliski
During the late 1970s, the People's Republic of Poland maintained an advanced nuclear program that brought the country close to the possibility of developing an atomic bomb. The initiative was led by Professor Sylwester Damazy Kaliski, the rector-commander of the Military University of Technology in Warsaw.
Under Kaliski's leadership, Poland joined an exclusive group of nations—including the USA, USSR, France, Germany, and Japan—conducting research into controlled thermonuclear fusion. However, the program faced a significant setback following a fatal car accident involving Kaliski on August 5, 1978. After sustaining severe head injuries in the crash, the professor died in a Warsaw military hospital six weeks later.
