Poland's Katowice Wujek Mine Proposed as Space Settlement Simulation Centre

Polish officials and scientists are pushing a plan to convert the former Wujek coal mine in Katowice into a Centre for Space Settlement Simulation. A delegation that included Katowice mayor Marcin Krupa, Silesian Marshal Wojciech Saługa and MP Monika Rosa met with national ministers—Science Minister Marcin Kulasa, State Assets Minister Wojciech Balczun and Deputy Energy Minister Marian Zmarzły—to present the proposal. The project aims to use the mine's underground space to test technologies for future lunar or Martian habitats and to support a broader bid to host a European Space Agency technology centre in the region.

Separately, Artur B. Chmielewski, the son of famed Polish comic creator Papcio Chmiel, is co‑authoring a new "Nowe Przygody Tytusa" comic series while working at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena. Chmielewski, who also co‑writes popular science books, is leading the effort to continue his father's iconic Tytus adventures for a new generation.
