Poland's Konotopie to unveil Europe's tallest statue of Mary

In the village of Konotopie in the Kuyavian‑Pomeranian region, construction of a 55.6‑metre monument to Mary, titled Matka Boża Miłosierna, is nearing completion. The figure itself will stand over 40 metres high on a 15‑metre crown‑shaped pedestal that will also serve as a viewing terrace.

The project is funded by entrepreneurs Grażyna and Roman Karkosikowie, who own the automotive‑components firm Boryszew and have previously built a new sanctuary in the village. Scaffold removal began on 29 June, and officials plan to unveil the statue and hold a consecration ceremony on 15 August, coinciding with the Catholic Feast of the Assumption. The monument will surpass the Christ the King statue in Świebodzin and the Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro, becoming the tallest Mary statue in Europe, though it will remain shorter than the 98‑metre Tower of Peace in the Philippines.

Local residents and the parish expect the statue to boost tourism and stimulate the regional economy.
