Konstantynów Radio Mast Collapse Ends Era of Tallest Structure

The Konstantynów radio mast near Gąbin, Poland, was completed in 1974 as a 646.38‑metre steel lattice tower, making it the world's tallest structure at the time. It served Polish Radio Program 1, broadcasting across Europe and beyond.

On 8 August 1991, while replacing anchoring cables, a failure in the final section caused the mast to collapse. The incident caused no injuries or fatalities. Plans to rebuild the tower were abandoned in 1992 after local residents expressed concerns about electromagnetic radiation. New, shorter masts (330 m and 289 m) were later erected at Solec Kujawski and began operating in September 1999, but they never matched the original tower's height or fame.
