Polish PiS faces internal split over Morawiecki's Rozwój Plus

Jarosław Kaczyński, president of the ruling Law and Justice (PiS) party, issued an ultimatum ordering members to withdraw from any political associations. The directive targets Mateusz Morawiecki’s “Rozwój Plus” association and other groups such as “Po pierwsze Polska”, giving members until 23 July to comply or face exclusion.

Morawiecki responded after a meeting with Kaczyński, saying “no intruder will divide me from the president” and stressing his loyalty to the party’s patriotic agenda. The party’s leadership reiterated the deadline and warned that non‑compliant MPs could be expelled.

Public opinion polls show a shift: around 56 % of respondents believe Morawiecki should leave PiS and form his own party, while 42 % think he will actually do so. In parallel, 45 PiS parliamentarians signed a letter urging Kaczyński to maintain unity and rejecting the ultimatum.

Despite the pressure, Morawiecki has not abandoned Rozwój Plus, and the dispute remains unresolved, with the potential to affect PiS’s cohesion ahead of the next national elections.
