Poland's National Electoral Commission proposes redistricting

The National Electoral Commission (PKW) has submitted a request to the Marshal of the Sejm to adjust the number of parliamentary seats allocated to specific electoral districts. The commission stated that the current distribution, which has not been updated since 2011, violates the Electoral Code because it fails to account for demographic shifts and territorial changes.

According to the PKW, the current system leads to "growing differences in the strength of voters' voices depending on where they live," undermining the constitutional principle of electoral equality. The proposal suggests changes for 23 of the 41 existing electoral districts.

Under the proposed recalculation, several major cities and growing regions would gain seats, including Wrocław, Warsaw, Kraków, Gdańsk, and Poznań. Conversely, districts in areas experiencing population decline, such as Łódź, Lublin, and Toruń, would see a reduction in their number of representatives. The total number of seats in the Sejm would remain fixed at 460.

To implement these changes for the next parliamentary elections, the Sejm must act no later than May 15, 2027.
