Poland's nuclear plant project moves ahead as ZBUD gears up to supply specialist cranes

Polish construction firm ZBUD is investing millions of zlotys to meet U.S. NQA‑1 quality standards so it can become a supplier of two specialised cranes – the Polar Crane for reactor assembly and the Cask Crane for spent‑fuel transport – for the upcoming nuclear "island" at Poland’s first nuclear power plant. The company has joined the "Great Seven" group of potential domestic suppliers identified by Westinghouse, the American provider of the AP1000 reactor technology.

The nuclear power plant project in Choczewo, Pomerania, has received a key permit from the regional governor, allowing the start of extensive preparatory works. Activities include land leveling, building temporary technical, social and office facilities, installing water, sewage and electricity connections, and deep geological surveys. When completed, the plant will house three AP1000 reactors with a combined capacity of 3,750 MW, built by the Westinghouse‑Bechtel consortium and owned by the state‑run Polskie Elektrownie Jądrowe.
