Zondacrypto scandal drives Polish crypto-regulation and political disputes
The Zondacrypto scandal continues to drive political tension in Poland, impacting legislative efforts to regulate the crypto-asset market. Following a presidential veto of previous government attempts, Zbigniew Bogucki has submitted a second presidential draft of the crypto-asset market law to the Sejm. Prime Minister Donald Tusk has criticized these moves as a sign of panic and has accused previous attempts at regulation of being undermined by amendments that would have prevented the state from blocking risky websites.
Public opinion remains divided on the fallout. An IBRiS poll indicates that 53 percent of respondents believe the Law and Justice (PiS) party is most implicated in the scandal, while 51 percent believe the event will influence the 2027 Sejm elections. Additionally, approximately 46.6 percent of respondents support the establishment of a parliamentary inquiry commission to investigate the matter.
Legal developments are also intensifying. The prosecutor's office has confirmed possession of recordings related to the investigation. Investigative journalist Szymon Jadczak has suggested these recordings may implicate Minister Tomasz Siemoniak rather than opposition figures, shifting the focus of the political dispute.
