Poland's role in WWII: Battle of Britain and Soviet invasion

Historical accounts detail critical turning points for Poland during the early stages of World War II. During the Battle of Britain, which lasted from July to October 1940, Polish pilots played a significant role. Specifically, on September 15, 1940, Polish forces achieved 28 shoot-downs, contributing to the Allied defense against German air attacks. A total of 145 Polish pilots participated across four squadrons, with 27 losing their lives.

Separately, the Soviet Union launched an armed aggression against Poland from the east on September 17, 1939. This invasion occurred while Polish forces were already defending against the German invasion that began on September 1. The Soviet action was a realization of the secret protocol of the Ribbentrop-Molotov Pact, which aimed to divide Poland between the two totalitarian powers. Historians note that this dual invasion effectively eliminated Poland's ability to continue organized resistance.
