Poland's Tauron advances Rożnów 2 pumped‑storage plant

Tauron has confirmed that it will continue building the Rożnów 2 pumped‑storage power station despite financial challenges. The plant is planned to deliver 767 MW of capacity and about 3.1 GWh of storage, with an estimated investment of roughly 7 billion złoty. It will be situated on the south shore of Lake Rożnowski in the Lesser Poland region, using the lake as the lower reservoir and a new upper reservoir on nearby hills in the Łososina Dolna commune.

Rożnów 2 is one of two major pumped‑storage projects identified in Poland’s grid development plan, the other being the 1 050 MW Młoty plant. Together they are intended to raise the country’s pumped‑storage capacity from the current 1 368 MW to 3 218 MW by 2036, supporting grid stability and providing greater flood‑protection capability – the Rożnów 2 reservoir could absorb up to 10 % of a potential flood wave from the Dunajec River. No grid‑connection agreements have been signed yet, but the project is considered key for Poland’s energy transition and for managing variable renewable generation.
