Poland's vegetable market sees price swings as Lidl discounts imperfect tomatoes

Wholesale traders at the Bronisze market reported that cucumber prices jumped to 8 zł per kilogram while green beans fell by about half. Celery vanished from shelves, with prices spiking from 2 zł to 5‑6 zł per kilogram before the shortage eases. Market expert Maciej Kmera linked the fluctuations to warm weather accelerating harvests and a shift in demand from Warsaw retailers to tourist‑area wholesalers.

At the same time, Lidl stores began selling “imperfect” Polish cherry tomatoes at a 42 percent discount, priced at 3.99 zł per kilogram. The tomatoes have minor colour spots and irregular shapes but retain the same taste and nutritional value as standard produce.
