Poland's Vistula and Zakrzówek water studies show limited industrial impact and healthy ecosystems
Long‑term monitoring of the Vistula River near the Kozienice power plant indicates that the plant’s cooling‑water withdrawals have a limited effect on the river’s ecosystem. Researchers highlight the combined influence of drought, climate change, river regulation and invasive species, noting that a holistic assessment is needed. Prof. Piotr Parasiewicz stated that “interpretation of data should be based on a holistic approach, considering both cooling‑water intake and broader environmental factors.”
A separate study of the Zakrzówek reservoir found no hydrogen sulfide in the water column down to 27 m, with the gas detected only in bottom sediments as a natural result of organic matter decay. Laboratory analyses confirmed good chemical water quality, neutral pH, low nutrient levels and minimal algal growth, indicating no risk of harmful blooms and a healthy aquatic environment suitable for recreation.
