Poland's Wage Surge Outpaces EU, Sparks Economic Debate

Eurostat data shows Polish average monthly wages rose to about €1,880 in 2024, an 11.2% increase that far exceeds the 2.8% rise in Germany and brings Poland to roughly 55% of the EU average of €3,317. The rapid growth follows a wave of returning emigrants attracted by higher pay and is partly attributed to increased public‑sector spending. Although the pace has slowed recently, the rise has narrowed a two‑decade gap that saw Poland’s wages climb from 30% to over half of the EU average since accession.

Analysts compare Poland’s trajectory with Spain’s, noting that Spain’s growth relied heavily on low‑paid immigrant labor and a demographic model that may not be sustainable. They warn that Poland could face similar challenges if wage growth is not matched by productivity gains and demographic stability, raising concerns about the long‑term resilience of its economic model.
