Poland's Water Utilities Meet Heatwave Demand as New Solar Desalination Cuts Costs

During a recent heatwave, the Chrzanów water utility boosted daily output by more than 60%, reaching around 20,000 m³ and satisfying a 20 % surge in consumer demand. The company’s investments in new wells, upgraded treatment stations and additional water‑rights allowed 90 % of the supply to come from its own sources, ensuring uninterrupted service for residents.

Separately, researchers demonstrated a compact solar‑powered desalination device that can produce 20 L of potable water per day, enough for roughly ten people, while meeting WHO drinking‑water standards. The system, built from a novel material, costs less than bottled water and could be deployed in water‑scarce regions such as small islands or arid areas.
