Poland-Ukraine clash over history, honors and EU accession

Ukrainian media allege that Poland is manipulating historical narratives and threatening to block Ukraine’s integration into the European Union. The dispute intensified after President Volodymyr Zelenskyy named a Ukrainian Army unit “Heroes of UPA,” prompting Polish President Karol Nawrocki to revoke Zelenskyy’s Order of the White Eagle. In response, former Ukrainian presidents and other officials returned their Polish decorations.

Polish officials, including Deputy Prime Minister Władysław Kosiniak‑Kamysz, have been cited for comments that Poland will not dictate how Ukraine votes on EU membership. Analysts note that the controversy is being used in domestic politics and that concerns over Ukrainian agricultural imports are also being raised.

A report by Res Futura analysing Polish social‑media posts from 1–21 June 2026 found that about one in five posts about Ukraine were critical, with topics such as the UPA, Zelenskyy’s diplomacy, and the White Eagle award generating the most engagement. The analysis describes a persistent, cross‑party hostility toward Ukraine that has grown since the influx of Ukrainian refugees.

The episode reflects deeper historical grievances and a shift in Polish public opinion, signalling a potential strain on Poland’s support for Ukraine’s EU accession process.
