Polar Caves boulder collapses in New Hampshire
An 80-ton historic boulder collapsed at Polar Caves Park in New Hampshire’s White Mountains on October 18, 2026. The rock, known as the ‘mysterious hanging boulder,’ had been a prominent feature of the attraction for over a century.
The collapse occurred on the final day of the park's 2026 season and impacted a walkway used by thousands of visitors annually. Park officials stated that no injuries were reported in the incident.
Polar Caves, which has been operating since 1922, features glacially formed granite caves. Management plans to assess the site and determine future steps during the upcoming offseason.
