Novatek accused of secretly funding $25 billion Alaska LNG project

The leadership of the American energy company Polar Train LNG has resigned following allegations that the sanctioned Russian energy giant Novatek has been secretly financing and controlling a $25 billion liquefied natural gas (LNG) project in Alaska.

Former CEO Joel Riddle stated he resigned in September after discovering that Novatek, rather than the expected investors, was directing the company’s strategic path. Riddle initially believed funding was provided by Gentry Beach, an investor linked to the Trump family, and Tech Wave Industrial Projects Management based in Abu Dhabi. However, he later alleged that Beach held no official position or capital in the venture and that the funds actually originated from Novatek.

Investigations by The New York Times and Financial Times suggest that Novatek executives discussed transferring up to $15 million to Tech Wave to sustain the project. The venture, which aims to repurpose a partially constructed Novatek terminal for Alaskan gas exports, was reportedly discussed between Vladimir Putin and U.S. envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner as part of broader diplomatic efforts regarding the war in Ukraine.

Polar LNG has denied the allegations, characterizing Riddle as a “disgruntled employee” and asserting that all operations comply with U.S. law. The company maintains that its affiliate, Tech Wave, provided the financing. Novatek has stated it granted Tech Wave the right to use its technology in Alaska and intends to become a minority owner in the project.
