Jakarta protests demand Asset Forfeiture Bill passage

Protests erupted in Jakarta as demonstrators gathered at the DPR/MPR RI building to demand the immediate passage of the Asset Forfeiture Bill. The Aliansi Masyarakat Pati Bersatu (AMPB) and the Gerakan Rakyat Menggugat (GERAM) were among the groups participating in the demonstrations. GERAM presented ten demands, including accountability for President Prabowo Subianto and Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka, while AMPB urged for the implementation of the death penalty for corruptors.

While some portions of the protest were reported as peaceful, tensions escalated when groups attempted to breach the parliament gates, leading police to deploy water cannons. The unrest resulted in the detention of 322 individuals, including 160 minors. Reports indicated that a police officer sustained a head injury during the clashes.

In response to the pressure, DPR leadership, including Vice Chairman Sufmi Dasco Ahmad, has committed to a target date of December 15, 2026, for the bill's ratification. Ahmad stated he is prepared to resign if this deadline is not met. However, anti-corruption advocates, such as Indonesia Corruption Watch (ICW), have expressed concern that recent drafts of the bill may have removed critical provisions, such as those regarding illicit enrichment.
