Poliçan Municipality rejects merger with Berati

The Poliçan Municipal Council has officially voted against a proposed draft law for administrative-territorial reform that would merge the municipality with Berati. During an emergency meeting, all 15 council members voted against the merger and threatened to resign if the Parliament approves the dissolution of the municipality.

Poliçan Mayor Adriatik Zotkaj criticized the proposal, stating that any division or merger of a municipality must have community approval. He argued that the municipality is economically viable, citing 318 active businesses, mountain and industrial tourism, and various social projects. Zotkaj warned that it would be a “shame for the Parliament” to vote for the merger without public consent.

In a separate development, the Cërrik Municipal Council has not yet reached a final decision regarding a potential merger with Elbasan. Mayor Florenc Doka stated that he will wait for public hearings and consultations with various interest groups and the community before taking a formal stance. Some council members have expressed concern that these consultations are being delayed.
