Carabineros officer Alejandro Ortiz Vásquez killed in Renca robbery attempt
Alejandro Ortiz Vásquez, a 32-year-old second corporal of Carabineros de Chile, was killed in Renca, Santiago, during an attempted robbery of his private vehicle. The officer, who was off-duty at the time, was intercepted by a group of at least three to four assailants on 21 de Mayo street. During the confrontation, the officer sustained fatal gunshot wounds to the head and neck.
The Fiscalía's specialized team against organized crime and homicide (ECOH) is leading the investigation. Authorities are examining multiple lines of inquiry, including the possible use of a white vehicle found burned in the neighboring commune of Quilicura by the suspects.
The incident has sparked significant political debate regarding public safety in Chile. President José Antonio Kast called for the urgent advancement of legislative tools to protect law enforcement, while Security Minister Martín Arrau emphasized the need for caution during the ongoing investigation.
