Virú school suspends in-person classes following extortion threats

The María Caridad Agüero de Arresse school in the Virú district of La Libertad, Peru, has suspended in-person classes, transitioning to a virtual format through October 30. This decision follows extortion threats made by criminals demanding money, including threats to plant explosives at the school.

Teachers reported the threats, which aim to jeopardize the physical and psychological integrity of students, faculty, and staff. The regional manager of Education for La Libertad, Rufino Rodríguez Román, confirmed that the National Police of Peru are investigating the incident to identify those responsible. This case marks the tenth educational institution in the La Libertad region to fall victim to criminal activity, which has previously included dynamite attacks and shootings.
