Police arrest suspects in separate Facebook Marketplace fraud cases

Law enforcement agencies in South Africa and the Maldives have arrested individuals suspected of conducting fraudulent sales on Facebook Marketplace.

In the Western Cape, South Africa, the SAPS Drone Unit apprehended two men following an attempted fraud incident at Riverlands Mall. The complainant reported that after advertising a camera for R29,000, he received a payment notification but the funds failed to reflect in his account. Investigations linked the suspects to existing fraud cases at Milnerton SAPS, and three additional complainants have filed similar charges.

In the Maldives, police arrested three men from the Noonu Atoll for allegedly defrauding buyers of MVR 60,000. The suspects are accused of advertising an engine and a dinghy for sale. One suspect was linked to a MVR 30,000 fraud involving a dinghy, while two others were arrested in connection with a separate MVR 30,000 engine scam. The suspects have been remanded in custody.
