Europe-wide surge in scams targeting elderly citizens
Law enforcement agencies across Poland and Italy are reporting a significant rise in sophisticated scams targeting elderly individuals. These criminal schemes frequently involve perpetrators impersonating authority figures, such as police officers, Carabinieri, or social workers, to gain trust and extract life savings.
In Italy, several incidents have been documented where scammers used fake badges and high-pressure tactics—often involving fabricated family emergencies—to steal jewelry and large sums of cash. In Poland, similar patterns have emerged, including the “social worker” method, where criminals promise aid like firewood or food to gain access to homes, and the “fake officer” method, where victims are coerced into handing over money to resolve alleged legal issues involving relatives.
Additionally, digital fraud is on the rise. Criminals are using social media and messaging apps to build romantic or professional relationships with seniors, eventually soliciting large transfers under the guise of medical emergencies or shipping costs. Authorities in both countries are urging citizens to verify the identity of any official through official channels and to remain vigilant against unsolicited requests for money or sensitive information.
