Police capture Trần Hoàng Diệu after spear attack wounds two officers

On July 29‑30, 2024, Trần Hoàng Diệu, a 45‑year‑old resident of Vĩnh Trung village in Vĩnh Hoàng commune, Quảng Trị province, Vietnam, assaulted police officers. After drinking, he blocked and insulted Lieutenant Nguyễn Quang Sang, striking his face, and pursued him with a spear (rựa). Later, provincial police arrived to summon him; he refused, brandished the spear and stabbed two officers – Lieutenant Tạ Quang Phong and Major Trần Minh Quang – causing injuries. Diệu then locked himself inside his house and resisted for nearly three hours. Police eventually overpowered him, seized the weapon and arrested him. The case remains under investigation by the Quảng Trị Provincial Public Security Department.

The incident highlights a violent assault on law‑enforcement personnel in central Vietnam and the subsequent police response to neutralize the threat and detain the suspect.
